Space Invaders!

Designed by Tomohiro Nishikado and originally released in 1978 by Taito, Space Invaders was considered a forerunner of video games and it boosted the video gaming industry from it's novelty status to a worldwide addiction.  In fact, it was so popular after its release that the craze caused a temporary shortage of 100-yen coins in Japan. 

Nowadays, the cocktail and cabaret versions of their arcade cabinets are considered a rare acquisition in the collecting arena.
